State conference promotes advocacy for the mentally ill

The NAMI Minnesota State Conference is taking place next month. It is the annual meeting of the National Alliance on Mental Illness Minnesota.

The theme of this year’s conference is “Advocacy in Action” and it is aimed at professionals, students, adults living with mental illness, non-profit organizations and family members. Attendees can apply to receive 5 CEU (Continuing Education) hours.

There will be keynote speeches from Gayathri Ramprasad of ASHA International and Sophia Vinogradov from the University of Minnesota Department of Psychiatry. There will also be 18 breakout sessions and workshops during the day. Topics are set to include caregivers as advocates, relationships and mental illness and changes to Medicaid and insurance law.

The day will also feature an awards luncheon which will be followed by the organization’s annual meeting.

This will likely be a great networking opportunity for mental professionals and students who will come from all around the state including Oakdale. Many of those attending will likely be placing a business card printing order with their local printing company.

The NAMI Minnesota State Conference will be held at the River Centre in St. Paul on November 4 from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Fees are $100 for the general public, $60 for NAMI members and $25 for students; scholarships are available. Call 651-312-3498 for more information.
