Oakdale residents invited to learn plant ID skills

A late summer stroll offers a good chance to brush up on plant ID (identification) skills, and an activity set up in Browns Creek State Park will help the public learn how to identify some commonly seen species in the field.

In an effort to encourage the public to gain better understanding and appreciation of the flora that calls the Oakdale area home, a self-guided ID walk has been prepared, and its starting point will be located at Neal Avenue Park. The organizers noted that the activity is suitable for kids and adults alike, and may be a fun idea for a family outing.

The planners of the event have had signage prepared that will be placed at different locations along the trail, and these will provide information about various species. A list of the plants has been prepared, and the participants are encouraged to download a Plant ID app such as iNaturalist or FloraIncognita before they head out.

By hosting an activity like this, an organization can encourage people to become more interested in the natural world. Signage and other materials for the event will be available at area banner printing companies, which will be able to prepare Signs utilizing materials that may be used outdoors for long periods of time.

The Gateway Browns Creek Trail will be welcoming “citizen scientists” for this activity from September 1st to September 7th. Advance registration is not required.
