An Oakdale planetarium has planned a special star party that will offer an introduction to astronomy, and the public is welcome to be a part of this family-friendly event.
The Bell Museum planetarium will be welcoming guests for an evening of stargazing, and it will also include an opportunity to learn about photographing the night time sky. The event will open with a presentation titled ‘Mayan Archeoastronomy’, and the fun will go on from there.
After the presentation, the attendees will be welcome to stop by the live demonstration of nighttime photography. Mark Job will have his equipment on hand, and he will answer questions and give tips for getting some great shots of celestial objects such as star clusters, nebulae, and galaxies.
Telescopes will be set up outside so the guests can give them a try for themselves. Guides will help them to locate and view a variety of objects in the sky, and they can answer whatever questions they have. The “star party” will be held rain or shine, and an alternative activity to the outdoor portion of the event will be planned if the weather is too inclement.
By combining fun with learning, this sort of function can offer an introduction to the hobby of astronomy. Sky charts, tips for telescope use and other handouts can be obtained from area Print shops to hand out during the evening.
Bell Museum in Saint Paul is set to host its evening of stargazing on October 11. While it is free to attend, donations will be appreciated.
