The 13th Annual Monarch Festival will be taking place in Minneapolis in mid-September. The festival celebrates the 2,300 mile migration that the butterflies take from Minnesota to Mexico this time of year.
Some activities will include How-to-Art lectures by Taylor Tinkham with information on depicting planting and sustaining milkweed and fall blooming flowers through artwork. Minneapolis Institute of Art will display Claudia Valentino’s set of brilliant butterfly wings for people to take selfies and distributing free art materials for guests to create their own.
Mariachi Son De Morelos will play traditional Mexican music that invites dancing and singing along. Aztec dancers, dressed in native costumes, with sacred drums and conch shell sounds will invite festival goers to the stage to join them in pursuing spiritual physical and mental elements of their cultural heritage.
Pre-school children and adults alike can enjoy readings of Ba Rea’s book, Monarch Come Play with Me. Detailed illustrations including eggs, caterpillars, chrysalides and butterflies depict the butterfly’s metamorphosis.
Exhibitors will have educational displays and interactive activities relating to monarch conservation, habitat protection, other pollinators, native plants and Latinos in Minnesota.
