May is coming soon and that means time for our annual MayDay Parade, Festival, and Tree of Life Ceremony.
Early in May, over 2,000 parade participants will be marching, rolling and boogying down Bloomington Avenue South. Bands will be blaring, dance teams will be doing their routines in a visual, music “walking theatrical performance” known as the Minneapolis MayDay Parade.
From April 6 through May 2, workshops at the Avalon Theatre at 1500 E. Lake St. create the parade’s giant puppets and masks with the help of many volunteers. Those wishing to donate items can refer to the Materials Wish List, which includes tools, wood, paper products, brushes/paint, Tape/glue, wire, fabric, and plastic items. Recycled items are greatly appreciated. Times are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:00 pm until 9:00 pm, and on Saturdays from 9:00 to 11:00 am, and again from 1:00 to 3:00 pm.
Between 200 and 300 people are expected to turn out for the pageant Tree of Life Ceremony. Two-story-tall puppets traveling in the red sun Flotilla cross the lake arriving at the slumbering Tree of Life. The ceremony will end with the singing of ‘You Are My Sunshine’.
The MayDay Festival will have live entertainment, food, canoe rides, and information tables where attendees can gather Business Cards from political candidates and learn about local causes, interests, and issues. It all takes place on Sunday, May 5, starting at noon in Powderhorn Park, 3400 15th Avenue.
