Two orchestras here in Minneapolis will be ending the old year and welcoming the new one with a celebratory night of music.
The Minneapolis Orchestra will present A New Year’s Celebration with Sondergard, Rachmaninoff, and Tchaikovsky.
The first half of the evening, the orchestra and the Angelica Cantanti Youth Choirs will present a symphonic suite for children - Sergei Prokofiev’s Winter Bonfire Suite, Opus 122. This will include Departure, Snow Outside the Window, Waltz on the Ice, and Bonfire, and will continue with Chorus of the Pioneers, Winter Evening, March, and Return.
Children enjoying winter events portrayed in Prokofiev’s Bonfire Suite are often in scenes selected by Stationery printers for notecards and Christmas cards.
Afterwards, pianist Sir Stephan Hough will play Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Opus 43.After the intermission, attendees will be treated to selections from Peter Ilych Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker, Opus 71. Guests are invited to join the orchestra in the Roberta Mann Grand Foyer for a midnight countdown to the new year, a champagne toast and vintage jazz.
A New Year’s Celebration will take place at Orchestra Hall, 1111 Nicollet Mall, beginning at 8:30 pm.
Elsewhere, jazz will welcome the new year, played by the Star of the North Jazz Orchestra at Vic Volare’s New Year’s Eve Under the Stars. Guests may dance and enjoy dinner and drinks.
Orchestra at Vic Volare’s New Year’s Eve Under the Stars will take place beginning at 8:00 pm at the Granada Theater, 3022 Hennepin Avenue S.
