Historic house hosts free festival in Bloomington

The Winter History Festival will be host to free recreational and educational activities for families as part of Winter Fete in Bloomington at the Gideon and Agnes Pond House.

The Pond House, named on the National Register of Historic Places, will have a snowshoeing tour of the Pond Dakota Mission Park, with snowshoes provided, among other activities.

There will also be a history lesson and demonstration near the fireplace in the Pond House about home lighting techniques from the 1800s, including the use of whale oil and candles.

Outdoor games for children will also be part of the activities, including Fox and Geese. Fox and Geese is a game similar to tag that is played on a fresh field of snow. Players pat down the snow in the pattern of a wagon wheel. The “geese” must run away through the paths of snow to escape the “fox” to avoid getting tagged.

Recreational events like these may make use of flyer printing to get the word out in the community.

The Winter History Festival event is happening at the Gideon and Agnes Pond House in Bloomington on February 1, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event is free and no registration is required. Free parking at the Pond Dakota Missing Park lot is limited. However, there is more free parking at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church next door.
