The Bloomington Center for the Arts is hosting the Continental Ballet Company’s rendition of The Nutcracker this December in Bloomington.
Considered a classic ballet piece that celebrates the holiday season, The Nutcracker weaves a narrative surrounding a young girl protagonist after she receives the titular object as a gift. Before long, the girl is sent on an other-worldly journey to the Land of the Sugarplum Fairy, where supernatural and awe-inspiring spectacle awaits.
Under the direction of Riet Velthuisen, the all-ages-appropriate show utilizes professional adult dancers. Most of the story is intact, featuring the music of Pyotr Tchaikovsky. However, Velthuisen has chosen to omit the battle scene, replacing it with a toned-down conflict.
Velthuisen, versed in classical ballet training in Europe that incorporates precision in its choreography, founded the Continental Ballet Company in 1988. A native of Holland, she danced professionally with the Dutch National Ballet, among other professional companies.
Ballet shows like this may choose to use poster printing for displaying show times and dates and for promotion.
Continental Ballet Company: The Nutcracker performs from December 6 through December 14 at the Schneider Theater at the Bloomington Center for the Arts at 1800 West Old Shakopee Road in Bloomington, with tickets available online. In addition, there is a special condensed version of the show on December 12 at 10 a.m., intended for students and seniors.
