Women artists given spotlight in Gaithersburg

Gaithersburg Activity Center is exhibiting the work of seven local female artists under the title ‘Love & Harmony’.

The exhibition will illustrate, through various media, themes of nature, spirituality, relationships, hope, and transformation.

Cynthia Farrell Johnson, a former US diplomat, calls on her 25 years of worldwide travel for inspiration, and paints using acrylic and gouache, which is a type of opaque watercolour. Meanwhile, Sandra Davis, a Commercial Art graduate, likes to focus on African American history. Her chosen media includes collage using secondhand scraps of paper, such as magazines, wrapping paper, and Posters.

Jenne Glover also likes to use collage as a media, but includes fabric, paints, oil pastels, and photographs to give added texture, colour, and rhythm. Gwendolyn Aqui-Brooks describes her work as Afro-Caribbean and uses several media, including paintings, quilts, and dolls.

One of the oldest artists to exhibit, at the age of 75, is Patricia Zannie. She recalls sitting in her highchair with a box of crayons during WWII. As a collage artist, she still uses crayons along with oil pastels, inks, and paint. Helen Zughaib uses both gouache and ink in her artwork, which has been exhibited worldwide. Lastly, Karlisima Rodas-Israel’s work is best described as ‘electric’, a reflection of the vibrant and intense colours of yellow, orange, fire-red, cobalt, and blue that she uses.

The exhibition is to run through February 20th. Art lovers may want to check for catalogue printing as all artwork will be available to purchase.
