The city council of Gaithersburg has approved plans for a Wawa location.

One councilmember voted against the construction of the convenience store and gas station chain, but four voted in favor.

The plan detailed that the Wawa will sit on 405 South Frederick Avenue on the other side of the street from Gaithersburg High School. The property is 1.84 acres and the building will be 5,060 square feet. It will be the first Wawa in Montgomery County.

Some residents expressed concerns over littering and health issues, but Mayor Ashman said an administration crew hired by the city would handle any problems that arise. Another large concern was the amount of traffic a Wawa store could create.

Ryan Spiegel, a member of the council, disclosed that the candidate must meet the city's legal requirements in order to build the Wawa. Spiegel admitted that city staff look over the application to see if it meets all the requirements and approve it if it does.

The legal requirements include one or more islands with trees on them in the parking lot to space out parking. Wawa would also need to connect the sidewalks on the southern part of the property adjacent to Holbrook Shopping Center.
