Vaccine complications drug contract continued

Emergent BioSolutions Inc. in Gaithersburg and the Health and Human Services Department will continue to work together for preparedness for smallpox.

The company disclosed a contract with Preparedness and Response Assistant Secretary's Office, which is inside the USHHS. It is valid for 10 years and worth around $535 million. Emergent Biosolutions will continue to provide Viccinia Immune Globulin Intravenous for the Strategic National Stockpile.

Emergent BioSolutions CEO and president Robert G. Kramer Sr. expressed the company's excitement in continuing to supply governments with solutions to severe health issues like smallpox. With the vaccine, it is an essential part of the protection against smallpox in the United States and any issues that arise during the process. The company promises to be reliable with the supply.

The FDA has only licensed the VIGIV vaccine to treat smallpox vaccine complications. The contract starts with a base period lasting a year and worth $23 million. The nine other years are optional but would fulfill the value of the total contract. The contracted labor includes collecting plasma, creating, and delivering the final drug. In the first year, the national government will provide plasma to Emergent for it to create VIGIV. In February 2018, Emergent and the US government signed the previous contract for $26 million and it lasted for one year. Its expiry led to this new contract.
