Small museum personnel to gather in Gaithersburg

The Small Museum Association will be holding its annual conference in Gaithersburg this February, bringing together heads, curators, and other staff from small museums across the country.

The conference will kick off with a series of bus tours across Frederick County, with a focus on how local institutions honour Maryland’s history, including a focus on African American history and Civil Rights. This will be followed by a series of talks, panels, and workshops on recent trends, with titles like “Where Does the Bus Even Park? Overcoming Logistical Challenges of Field Trips” and “Unlocking the Mysteries of Your Organization’s Tax Return” and “With a Staff of One, Vision and Collaboration Make it Happen.” A keynote speaker will be announced in the lead-up to the conference.

Professional conferences like this also help to drive business to the local area and provide an opportunity for networking, with many preparing through resumé and business card printing. The Small Museum Association conference will include a number of networking events, including an opening reception at the National Capital Trolley Museum, a banquet, and breakfasts on each day. Speakers at the event will represent institutions such as the Rosenbach Museum & Library, Haldimand Museums at the Cayuga Heritage Centre, and the Antique Boat Museum.

The 2025 Small Museum Association conference will take place at the Gaithersburg Marriott Washingtonian Center from February 17 to 19.
