Outgoing council president Gabe Albornoz presented the new council at the ceremony. The council now has six female members out of a total of eleven. According to Albornoz, each of the newly elected council members brings their own legislative priorities and innovative ideas. He also pointed out that this was also the most racially inclusive council Montgomery County has ever had.
Marc Elrich was sworn in to serve his second term as County Executive. He commented on the council’s current makeup:
“When I first broached the idea of expanding the council, we discussed the impact it could make on diversity. I don’t think any of us imagined that this could be the result.”
According to Elrich, the greatest challenge for the new council will be affordable housing. He stated that changes would have to be made to policies around affordable housing so that they are able to build one county for all. He has a plan that involves replacing the active dwelling unit program and putting a rent-stabilization program in place in towns such as Gaithersburg.
Among the newly elected officials who can update their Business Cards are Kristin Mink, who becomes the first Asian American to hold a seat on the council. Of the 11 members, two are Black, and two are Latino. The incoming president is Evan Glass.
