Gaithersburg kids bowl the afternoon away

Parents in Gaithersburg are getting their children ready for the upcoming Half Day by strengthening their bowling arms.

Organized by the Elementary After School Program, Half-Day Hoopla - Duckpin Bowling and Pizza is an afternoon of fun for children in grades one to five.

For those unfamiliar with the game, duckpin bowling is a variation on ten-pin bowling that uses a smaller, softball-sized bowling ball and smaller, lighter pins. Due to the difficulty of getting a strike, bowlers are allowed three bowls per frame. Like ten-pin through, ten frames make up one game, and scoring is also the same.

Children will be able to play one game of duckpin bowling with their friends, organizing in groups of four to six. During the game, they will also be treated to a large slice of pizza, with varieties like cheese and pepperoni available. Children will be shuttled to the bowling alley and back from Summit Hall Elementary. Special Flyers with permission slips for the event are available online or at all Gaithersberg elementary schools.

Half-Day Hoopla will take place on March 3 from 12:55 to 5:30 pm starting at Summit Hall Elementary and ending at the Activity Center at Bohrer Park.
