As a part of the upcoming Book Festival in May, Gaithersberg will be holding a poetry contest for high schoolers. Students from all over the Washington Metropolitan Area can submit entries to the contest.
Great examples of poetry include 'The Raven' by Edgar Alan Poe and 'Ozymandias' by Percy Bysshe Shelley. More information can be found on sites such as the Poetry Foundation.
The qualifications for contest entrants include that they must be a high school student and resident of Maryland, Virginia, or Washington D.C. Each entrant can only submit one poem.
The qualifications for the entered poem are as follows. It must be original and unpublished. The poem must be about freedom, escape, or community.
Once the judges have reviewed them, 12 poems will be selected as finalists, and these will be published on the website. Poets will be asked to record videos of them reading their work. These particularly keen on presentation may want to consider visiting Print shops to get a professional looking print of their poem for this event.
The top three poems will be announced during the Book Festival and will be awarded cash prizes. A fan favorite poem will receive a cash prize as well.
