Montgomery County is moving forward with a project worth $1.6m to bring a bus rapid transit system to the County, and leaders in Gaithersburg and Rockville are deciding on a location that will be of greatest benefit to those two cities and the County overall.
A planned bus rapid transit system will provide many advantages for the two cities, but the discussion is over the location of the corridors for the transit lines and funding for the project. The focus is on bringing ‘bus only’ lanes to the Rockville Pike, from Bethesda to Clarksburg.
According to the Mayor of Gaithersburg, Jud Ashman, there has to be some way to get people back and forth despite the density of the city.
Some Rockville residents are concerned about losing two lanes of the streets to traffic for buses that only operate in the center of town. One proposal calls for construction of a tunnel under Rockville Pike for through traffic, allowing for room on top for the bus rapid transit system. Rockville Mayor Bridget Newton said that this would also allow for green space, which is also needed in the city.
The two cities may work with a local printing company to Print Brochures and pamphlets about this project that can be distributed to residents, perhaps providing information and inviting their input.
