This endorsement recommended him as the chosen candidate to serve in the House of Delegates, succeeding Kumar P. Barve, in Annapolis. Spiegel’s nomination will now be submitted to Governor Wes Moore, who holds the authority to officially appoint him.
Spiegel emerged as the chosen candidate from a pool of 11 other applicants vying for Barve's vacant seat. Two applicants withdrew their candidacy prior to the central committee meeting. Barve, a longstanding member of the legislature since 1991, recently stepped down from his position to work for the Maryland Public Service Commission.
Following the vote, Spiegel commented to say:
“I’m really humbled and honored tonight.”
On the second ballot, Spiegel secured a total of 12 votes from the central committee members. This was enough to edge out Johvet Lopez, who received 10. A consultant and community activist, Tiffany Kelly, earned one vote during the second ballot. In the initial round of voting, Spiegel garnered eight votes compared to seven for Lopez. Four other candidates received votes during the first ballot. Printing services could be used to create ballots for elections.
The voting process concluded with a comprehensive three-hour meeting, during which 11 candidates had the opportunity to deliver presentations. Afterwards, the central committee members engaged in a question-and-answer session with the candidates.
