Vionix delivers new energy storage system

In a move hoped to bring technological advancement to the area, a new large-scale energy storage system has recently been delivered to the United States Army at Fort Devens by Vionix Energy.

The company has also created a consortium of six companies, including private investment company Starwood Energy Group; United Technologies Corp., a provider of high technology systems and services; supply chain management company Jabil; and 3M to launch and deploy a new flow energy storage technology. These companies will help Vionix, based in Woburn, to finance, license, and manufacture the storage system.

Researchers at United Technologies Corp. developed and engineered the technology, while an energy award from the Advanced Research Projects Agency was used to fund the initial technology. This award is an initiative of the United States Department of Energy.

Engineering, procurement, and construction services for the project were provided by Siemens, and the electrode assemblies for the flow batteries were provided by 3M.

Vionix, along with its partners, said the technology has been designed so that full storage can be maintained over a period of 20 years, which is far longer than grid storage solutions that use lead acid or lithium ion batteries. The company will use marketing services and other promotional strategies to target the new technology for applications of utility-scale in distribution, island, microgrid, and transmission markets.
