Devens farm completes final expansion
Little Leaf Farms of Devens, a producer of lettuce grown in greenhouses, has announced that it now has a new greenhouse and is offering virtual tours.
Such announcements are often made known throughout a region with poster printing.
The company was founded in 2016 with five acres of greenhouses and has now expanded to 10 acres, which is the last of the company’s series of expansions. It has discovered an innovative and unique way to grow plants without soil and using mineral nutrient solutions in water. This new approach is more sustainable than previous growing methods as it uses captured rainwater and sunlight to grow fresh lettuce indoors. It has also been found to be more efficient than outdoor farming and can take place over the course of the year.
Little Leaf uses other innovative practices to maintain sustainability. The greenhouse is heated with natural gas that operates with over 95% efficiency. The highest-quality glass is used in the greenhouse so as to allow the greatest use of natural sunlight. Finally, Little Leaf delivers its lettuce only to stores within a day’s drive of the farm to minimize impact on the environment and maintain freshness.
The virtual tour includes a walkthrough of the new state-of-the art greenhouse, cooking demonstrations from local chefs, and a discussion about the farm from Paul Sellew, CEO of Little Leaf.
