Early history
In addition to suggesting the name of the community, Dunbar was the Stoughton Musical Society's first president, serving in that post from 1786 until 1808. Records of the society have been compiled, and a volume published in 1928 tells it held its organizational meeting on November 7, 1786, at which time Dunbar was elected president. This meeting, and the ones that followed, were held at the Robert Capen house. The house is gone, but some of its timbers have been preserved by the society, which is still in existence. Renamed the Old Stoughton Music Society, it is the oldest such choral society in the nation.
Another prominent figure in the history of Colonial America, Paul Revere, also has a connection with Canton. He built the first copper rolling mill in the country here in 1801. Revere is famous for riding through the night in April 1775, to warn members of the colonial militia that British troops were approaching.
Canton also boasts the Canton Corner Historic District ,which includes the Tilden House, one of the oldest homes in the United States. A city as rich in history as Canton often has a historical society, as Canton does. Organizations like this have exhibits and ephemera to make sure the community's history is not lost, and can be accessed by scholars as well as casual visitors. The economy
Canton was an early hub of industry; Revere built a gunpowder factory in the town as well as his copper mill. As the town developed, however, industry declined, and today the community is largely residential, and much of its economy is based on services, though there are still light manufacturing companies in operation. Among the companies headquartered here are the Boston Mutual Life Insurance Company, and Dunkin' Donuts, now simply called Dunkin'.
