Special activities celebrate heritage of Essex County

More than 150 free events will be taking place next month as part of Trails & Sails, which explores the Essex National Heritage Area, of which Andover is a part.

The Essex National Heritage Area was established by an act of Congress 20 years ago and, to celebrate this special anniversary, this collection of Trails & Sails events is the largest ever, meaning the appreciation of the area can be enhanced.

For those interested in history, some of the activities planned include exploring the history of the Civil War in the area at such places as the Powder House on Newburyport and the history of aviation at the first airport in New England in Newbury.

For outdoor enthusiasts, there will be walking tours of Den Rock Park in Lawrence; touring the Babson Boulders in Dogtown, Gloucester; and exploring the Harold Parker State Forest in North Andover.

Fun activities for the entire family will also be offered, including a hop, skip and jump tour of downtown Andover; exploring the night sky in Amesbury; and becoming a time traveler in Danvers.

The events will be taking place from September 16 through September 18 and September 23 through September 25. Trails & Sails might benefit from the assistance of a local printing company to promote these events by means of Posters and Banners displayed in the various cities.
