Andover begins curbside pickup of food waste

The collection of food waste by curbside is now available in Andover. This was made possible by a partnership between Black Earth Compost and the town.

Residents need to sign up for this service and can choose pickup every week or biweekly. They can also pay for the services monthly or for a period of six months. The first 300 houses that sign up will be given starter kits at no charge, each of which includes compostable liners and a bin for curbside collection.

Dairy products, bones, meat, compostable Packaging that is certified, paper products which have been soiled, and miscellaneous food scraps will be accepted by the program. The collected materials will be transported by Black Earth to one of its facilities for composting in Manchester-by-the-Sea or Groton. It will then be processed into compost that can be used by gardens, farms, and other establishments. A voucher will be given each spring to households that participate in this program for a free bag of compost, one cubic foot in size, for which participating stores will redeem.

Melissa Eusden, Sustainability Director of Andover, said:

“Food waste makes up a significant portion of what households throw away, and curbside composting gives residents an easy way to keep that material out of the waste stream and put it to productive use.”
