New dorm in the works at local college

Merrimack College in North Andover has been granted approval for the construction of a new dormitory project, which will increase the number of beds on the campus by 350.

The expansion will consist of four buildings and a community center on Austin Green, which is now an open field. Assuming necessary approvals are made in time, construction is expected to be completed for an opening in the fall of 2015.

The North Andover Planning Board approved the project following the conditions by the approval of the Andover Planning Board to keep the students safe and maintain the quality of life for those in the neighborhood. This means that the dormitories need to have a buffer zone and brush and fencing along Rockridge Road; one of the roads bordering the site. They also require a secure gate so as to allow access for emergency personnel and restrict foot traffic, and must ensure that vehicle traffic on Rockridge and its surrounding streets is minimal.

The project crosses the line between the towns of Andover and North Andover, as two of the dormitories will be located within North Andover, so it requires the review of the Planning Boards of both towns and will need to be reviewed by the Conservation Commission of Andover.

Students who attend the College can expect to see flyer printing with more information about the new dormitories and their amenities.
