The Senior Center in North Andover on Main Street will be celebrating Black History Month in February with three special events.
Local Print shops that specialize in poster printing can help to promote special events like these.
The first event will be a screening of the film “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” This is a movie about the life of Gertrude “Ma” Rainey who was a pioneer in the singing of blues and would later become known as “The Mother of the Blues.” This film will be shown on Thursday, February 2 at 1:00 pm.
A lecture titled “The History of the Black Press in Boston” will be the second event. Donna Halper, a media historian and an associate professor at Lesley University in Cambridge, will talk about the history of Black journalism and about some of the Black columnists, investigative journalists, political reporters, and sportswriters. This talk will be held at 1:00 pm on Thursday, February 9.
The last event will be a documentary titled “Summer of Soul.” During the summer of 1969, the filming of the Harlem Cultural festival took place. The film is a testament to the healing power of music when there is unrest both in the present and in the past, and highlights the importance of history to one’s spiritual well-being. This film will be screened on Monday, February 13 at 10:00 am.
