The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards were recently given to three students from the Andover Public Schools for their exemplary artwork.
A silver medal and two national gold medals were awarded to Audrey Gallacher, a senior at Andover High School, for her submission in the Drawing and Illustration category. A gold medal was awarded to Dake Zhang, a junior at Andover High School, for his painting, American Boyfriend, in the Painting category. Jessica Xu from West Middle School also received a silver medal for her piece, Born to Fly High, in the category of Drawing and Illustration. Announcements of such distinctions can be made known to the community through banner and poster printing.
Gallacher will go to Carnegie Hall in New York City in June to attend the national celebration ceremony and display her two gold medal drawings. She plans to attend the Art Institute of Chicago in the fall and major in Fine Art and Illustration.
Art teacher at Andover High School, Jessica Daviso, commented that it is rare for students to receive both silver and gold medals for their work, and that the school is very proud of Gallacher’s accomplishments.
Superintendent Sheldon Berman added that the arts programs at the Andover Public Schools provide students with the ability to express themselves. Their talents are thereby celebrated with these awards.
