Bank pledges $20M investment in Louisville neighborhood

Fifth Third Bank recently announced that in conjunction with Enterprise Community Partners it is pledging a maximum of $20 million to the Louisville neighborhood of Russell.

The Russell neighborhood is among only nine primarily Black communities across the country that have been selected by Fifth Third Bank. The funds were applied for by the group, Russell: A Place of Promise.

According to bank officials the money will be utilized for capital, workforce development, job creation, philanthropy, plus affordable housing. The goal is to grow sustainable Black business and home ownership. As Fifth Third Bank representative Jada Grandy-Mock explained:

"We want to create opportunities for African Americans to create intergenerational wealth and rise out of poverty into prosperity."

Long-time Russell resident Jackie Floyd, Russell: A Place of Promise’s lead outreach specialist, remarked that she wants to see better schools, additional affordable housing and new businesses in the area. Floyd speaking to Spectrum News 1 about the neighbor said:

"Russell is a community that sticks together. The people love each other. They work together. They’re proud of their community."

Regional Fifth Third President Kim Halbauer remarked that just approximately 16 percent of Russell's owned houses have Black family owners.
