Traditional mint julep program goes virtual this year
The Woodford Reserve has decided this year to honor Diane Crump, the first Kentucky Derby jockey, with its $1,000 mint julep cup.
Woodford releases a new Mint Julep cup each year and the funds raised are donated to charity. The 2020 cups will, in Crump’s honor, benefit the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund.
In the past, the Mint Julep cups were sold filled with a mint julep at Louisville’s Churchill Downs on Derby Day. This year’s race, like many events, was postponed and is currently scheduled for September 5. Morris is inviting those purchasing a cup to take part in an online julep experience with him. Rather than receiving their mint julep filled cup at the track, it will be delivered (empty) to their home.
High-end commemorative items are sometimes chosen as corporate gifts for high volume customers.
This year, Woodford is supplying a recipe for Diane Crump Blackberry Mint Julep in honor of Kentucky and Crump. The big difference in this julep is the addition of blackberry preserves and a garnish of fresh blackberries, since Kentucky’s official fruit is the blackberry. The cups can be ordered on Woodford Reserve’s website while they last.
From the Vault, a Louisville jeweler has handcrafted the $1,000 silver cup, of which there are 121. A collection of 25 gold cups were also created, coming with a silver sipping straw; these sell for $2,500 each.
