Thunder Over Louisville to offer waterfront entertainment
Spring is around the corner and the Kentucky Derby is within sight, but between these two events, Thunder Over Louisville will once again thrill Louisville residents.
The Kentucky Derby Festival’s annual kickoff event, Thunder Over Louisville, usually takes place in April about two weeks before Derby Day. This will be the first in-person, full-scale show since the event was held in 2019. In 2020, the show was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic and although the 2021 show did take place it was held with a number of modifications.

The theme for this year’s Thunder production is “The Legend Returns”. Regarding this year’s plans for the event, Wayne Hettinger announced that the show would include, the “best aircrafts that this country has” and “many aircrafts we’ve never seen.”
Among the aircraft mentioned were the A-10, B-2 Bomber, C-17, F-16, and C-130J Super Hercules from the Kentucky National Guard.
The 75th anniversary of the U.S. Air Force will be recognized at the show and the organization will be honored with a special warbird formation.
The airshow will take place on April 23 at Waterfront Park, with a drone show planned immediately prior to a fireworks display. Free rides to the site will be available via the city’s TARC network, courtesy of Humana.
