What's Happening in Louisville, KY…

Nutella owner buys Louisville Girl Scout Cookie maker

The Kellogg Company has made a deal with the Ferrero Group to sell the Italian confectionery a few of its brands.

A Louisville factory that bakes a large portion of the Girl Scout Cookies each year is owned by Kellogg, and is included in the deal with Ferrero, the maker of Nutella. The deal also covers several production facilities throughout the country among which are the ones in Florence and Little Brownie Bakers in Shively, Kentucky.

As per the agreement between Kellogg and Ferrero, for $1.3m, Kellogg is selling the cookie portion of its business, which includes Famous Amos, Keebler, and Murray cookies. The sale is expected to close no later than the end of July.

Daily operations at the affected plants will not change, according to a statement made by Kellogg to the Courier Journal. Among the changes that normally take place in a situation such as this is the ordering of new letterheads.

The majority of the local plant’s output consists of Samoas, Trefoil, and Thin Mints cookies. The Girl Scouts of the USA also have a licensed vendor contract with a Richmond, Virginia factory. Total cookie production for the Girl Scouts is around 200 million boxes, which each year generates almost $800m.

Among companies in the global chocolate confectionery market, the Ferrero Group is the third largest. Ferrero was founded in 1946 in Italy and is known for its Ferrero Rocher chocolates.
