What's Happening in Louisville, KY…

New purpose for old Louisville AT&T building

The City of Louisville has sent an official letter of intent stating it agrees to pay $6.8m to the TRIO Commercial Property Group at the closing on property owned by AT&T.

Constructed in 1978, the nearly 200,000-square-foot-building at 601 West Chestnut Street is vacant and has been on the market since 2015. The original asking price was $11.4m and has most recently listed at $10.2m, so the Louisville Metro Government’s offer amounts to around two thirds of the listed price.

The building will replace the almost 70-year-old Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) headquarters, which in addition to being too small has also demonstrated safety and structural problems. The larger space will enable police command staff to work in proximity to each other.

Any relocation of a business or government agency necessitates the services of professionals printers to provide business cards and letterheads with the new address.

Although Metro Council must still approve the purchase, it seems that is primarily a formality as all members appear to be on board.

Mark Zoeller, the metro facilities director, explained the city is carefully examining the building to determine the necessary modifications and their cost. He said that it is still undetermined which other agencies will also be utilizing the building.

The hope is that the city can have the purchase finalized by January 2022.
