Louisville prepares for April fireworks

The Thunder Over Louisville 2015 has been scheduled for early spring. The event is the official ceremonial opening for the Kentucky Derby Festival, while also being the largest fireworks show in North America.

The Thunder Over Louisville fireworks and air show has been rated as one of the top 100 events on the continent. More than 700,000 attendees come to admire the spectacular shows.

The original fireworks show took place over 20 years ago having a huge impact on the community. As organizers were discussing a name for the event, they realized the sound rolled across the landscape sounding like thunder. Hence, the title of Thunder Over Louisville was born.

It takes more than 2,000 people to produce and manage the fireworks show. Those involved include public safety officials, vendors, volunteers, clean-up crews, and, of course, participants.

The event is free to the public along with the purchase of a Pegasus Pin. Sponsors contribute support allowing free admission. The best areas to view the fireworks are along 8th Street to Clay Street and north of the Main Street.
