What's Happening in Louisville, KY…

Louisville Police Chief to step down

Erika Shields, Louisville’s chief of police, has tendered her resignation effective as of January 2, 2023.

Mayor-elect Greg Greenberg made the announcement that Shields had volunteered to give up her position following a post-election meeting with him. Chief Shields was not on hand for the announcement and Greenberg did not share the content of their private conversation.

Prior to the election, questions were raised in several quarters about whether Greenberg would keep Shields on if he were elected, but the then candidate “dodged” them, according to the Louisville Courier-Journal.

Savvy elected officials sometimes utilize printing services to keep their constituents informed about changes they have enacted in policy or personnel.

In January 2021, current mayor, Greg Fischer, hired Chief Shields to replace former Chief Steve Conrad, whom he had dismissed in June 2020. Shields was the second woman to service as chief of police in Louisville, and was also the community’s first openly gay chief of police.

The newly elected mayor has said that he plans to begin the search for an interim chief immediately. Although Chief Shields’ resignation becomes effective on January 2, 2023, when the new mayor takes office, she has agreed to remain with the department through February 28, 2023, to assist with the transition.

In addition to a shopping for a new police chief, it is anticipated that Greenberg will be looking to fill four other key positions in his administration.
