Over centuries, nurserymen have found ways to increase fruit and flower production on their trees and shrubs, and London home gardeners may want to make plans now for an upcoming workshop that will teach them some of these techniques.
The state’s College of Agriculture, Food and Environment offers a variety of continuing education opportunities , and one of these will be its upcoming Fruit Tree Grafting class. It will be an introduction to the practice, and the students will learn how it can be utilized with the cultivars that are often used by home and small-scale growers.
The learners will be introduced to a variety of methods for grafting, such as bud and whip techniques, and they will also be taught how to select a rootstock that will be a good match for the shoot or bud (scion) they plan to use. The guest presenter or the session will be Stacy White, and she will provide real time examples of how to create a successful graft.
Hosting this type of activity allows an educational institution to support the local community. Print shops can be counted on to prepare customized materials such as texts, diagrams, and tip sheets to give out to each registrant.
The Laurel County CES has made arrangements to offer this horticultural workshop on March 23. It is scheduled to begin at 10:00 am, and the website for the Laurel County Office includes both more information and a link to register for the activity.
