After years of waiting, officials in London announced the curbside recycling will finally come into effect in to the city.
Although the announcement was made at the beginning of June, at a meeting of the city council, it will still be several months before the recycling program begins rolling out. It is expected that the program will kick off at the beginning of 2015. In the meantime, officials could use brochure printers to educate residents about what will and will not be accepted as part of the new recycling program.
To implement the idea, the city will have to invest in new trucks. EZ-Pack Trucks will build two new, automated garbage trucks specifically for recycling. The vehicles will give the town another way to go green, as they will be powered by compressed natural gas instead of diesel fuel.
Natural gas is a cleaner burning fuel than diesel, and trucks that run on it also get better mileage. To accommodate the new trucks, the city also has to build a filling station. According to Mayor Troy Rudder, the use of natural gas instead of diesel will save the city $100,000.
Part of the phase-in for the curbside recycling program involves hiring new workers to drive the trucks and pick up recyclables. The city is in the process of hiring new workers, who will be trained once the trucks have been built.
