Londoners to get lowdown on law

At the beginning of March, residents of several Kentucky counties, including Laurel, Whitley, Rockcastle, and Wayne, will have the opportunity to get to know state police and the process of enforcing the law a little better.

The Citizens Police Academy is an annual offering from the Kentucky State Police at Post 11. While the program does not train people to become police officers, it does aim to promote better relations between citizens and police and help reduce crime rates by doing so.

The program teaches enrollees about fire investigations, roadside stops, patrols and lab work. Part of it is interactive, featuring simulations and the chance to handle police equipment.

The state police could use flyer printing to get the word out about the Academy, and can use testimonials from past graduates to promote the program. Those who graduate from the program are allowed to work with Post 11 to plan community events and fundraisers.

The Academy is open to residents of the area over the age of 18. Admission is free, but people need to submit their applications by February 26. To officially graduate from the course, a minimum attendance record of 80% is needed.
It will be held on Tuesday evenings over the course of eight weeks, from March 3 until May 15, and takes place at the Laurel County Health Department, at 525 Whitley Street in London.
