In the days before commercial yeast, many home bakers used a sourdough starter to make their bread rise, and a London class will bring this once common practice into the 21st Century.
Anyone who would like to learn the ins and outs of working with sourdough is welcome to register for the class coming up at 200 County Extension Road, and it is being offered by Laurel County Cooperative Extension Family and Consumer Sciences. It will start from scratch with no knowledge of baking assumed, and attendees will walk away knowing some of the secrets of artisan breadmaking.
The instructor will offer step-by-step guidance to the group, answering any questions the attendees might have. They will learn how to get their starter up and bubbling, and how the process of fermentation makes their loaf rise. They also will find out how to troubleshoot some problems that are common to the beginner when working with sourdough.
As they teach how to make tasty treats at home, baking and other culinary class can be both fun and thrifty. Recipe cards, promotional Pens, and other materials for a session can be crafted by local Print shops.
This introduction to the art and science of sourdough starters will kick off at 6:00 pm on Tuesday, April 9. It is free for Laurel County residents.
