London Elementary School to start early learning program

At the start of the new school year, London Elementary School will be the site of a new Born Learning Academy – the first program of its kind in Laurel County.

According to the Kentucky Department of Education, the majority of kindergarten students in the state begin their academic careers unprepared for school. Thanks to a grant provided by Toyota Motor Manufacturing, and the efforts of the Governor's Office of Early Childhood and the United Way, a number of Born Learning Academies will open in schools throughout the state this fall. Schools participating in the Academies might like to use vibrant Brochures to inform parents about the program.

The program at London Elementary School will begin in September and should go through March. Hillary House, who is the director at the London Elementary Family Resource Center, will oversee the program at the school. The focus will be on working with parents to help their children get ready for school.

The program will host one session per month, for a total of six sessions, in the evenings. Topics will include health and nutrition, helping children learn to read, and finding ways to create learning opportunities every day. Dinner and babysitting will be provided at the sessions.

London Elementary's Born Learning academy is funded for the next two years, but the organizers hope to be able to continue it beyond that. The sessions are open to parents with children under the age of five.
