Stephen Pruitt, the state's Education Commissioner, submitted Johnson and four other schools in Kentucky to the US Department of Education.
The goal of the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program is to recognize private and public elementary, middle, and high schools for either academic excellent or working to close achievement gaps among certain student groups.
So far, the department of education has recognized 7,500 schools across the US as Blue Ribbon Schools. If Johnson does receive the accolade, no doubt officials will want to hang up Banners to let parents, teachers, and students know.
The highest performing schools in the state, based on exams or state assessments, can be recognized as an Exemplary High Performing School. These schools also have excellent graduation rates and student group performance.
Schools in the Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing category have the highest rates of closing achievement gaps over a period of five years. These schools also have high graduation rates and student group performance rates.
Speaking to the Sentinel-Echo, Dr. Doug Bennett, the district's superintendent, stated:
“We are very pleased that Johnson Elementary has been nominated as a Blue Ribbon School. This nomination speaks well for the hard work of the faculty, staff, students, and principal.”Get a Free Quote for Banners
