London celebrates 75 years of homemaking

Laurel County Extension Office Homemakers celebrated 75 years on May 3, showing that home economics and homemaking are still going strong.

About 226 women, or homemakers, from London and other parts of Laurel County are members of the organization. Several dozen of them gathered together on May 3 to honor the group's history, with a day that featured dinner and a musical performance by the Chaney sisters.

Also part of the anniversary celebration was the presentation of a "check" to David Westerfield, the Laurel County judge executive. The check, perhaps created by a local Print company, was for a total of 4,833,939 hours, which is the amount the volunteers of the organization have donated over the course of three quarters of a century. In the past year alone, the members donated 8,500 hours.

The Homemakers organization is made up of several smaller clubs, including the Homesteaders club, Hooks and Crooks, Felts Homemaker club, and Basket Cases. During the anniversary party, a number of awards were given out to members, including ones recognizing those who had perfect attendance, donated the greatest amount of their time, or had been with the Homemakers for the greatest number of years.

Jerri Durham took home the award for most volunteer hours with 1,854. Mildred Storm, who has been with the organization for 50 years, won longest length of service.
