At the end of April, unexpected sounds filled the halls of the Laurel County Public Library in London, when Cherish the Blue, an experimental folk band, put on a concert.
The band's performance lasted for an hour and included 15 songs, many of which were originals written by members of the band. They performed a cover of ‘I'll Fly Away’, written by Albert E. Brumley and a hit in 1929 originally. Robbie Bryan, who plays standup bass with the group, noted that the band covers that particular song because it is in the public domain.
The five-piece band also features a mandolin, played by David Stenulson, and an accordion, played by Kendra Bryan, who also sings lead. Guitarist Micah Jones and backing vocalist Robin Lindsey, who also played a variety of small instruments, are the other two group members.
So far, they have been playing together for about a year. Their style combines elements of traditional folk and bluegrass with pop.
About three dozen people were in attendance at the concert. The library can use postcard printing to get the word out about future performances and events to be held in the space.
The next band to perform at the library is Pleasant Company, a folk group from Somerset. This will take place on May 26, from 6:00 pm until 7:00 pm.
