CSI: Florence local kids become detectives for a week
With the popularity of the CSI television franchise (Crime Scene Investigators), it is no wonder the Florence Police Department's annual CSI camp has become one of this city's most popular summer camps.
The CSI franchise (CSI Las Vegas, CSI New York, CSI Miami, and CSI Cyber) was a popular crime drama series. The show followed a team of forensic investigators as they used physical evidence to solve heinous murders.
In this real-life version, experts from the Florence Police Department will demonstrate how they analyze crime scenes and collect evidence with hands-on learning. Along with some of the latest technological techniques, the classes will also touch on some old-school methods such as fingerprinting.
It is hoped that CSI Camp will get local students interested in police work and have a new respect for the work that officers do. This is just one way the Florence Police Department is trying to connect with the community. Adults are invited to the Florence Police Citizen's Academy, which is a once-a-week class that stretches eight weeks and teaches citizens SWAT techniques, traffic laws and search and seizure laws, and a K9 demonstration.
Classes such as these can look to local print shops for reading materials, hand-outs and visual aids.
Spaces for the CSI Camp are limited and fill up quickly. Students between the ages of 12 and 17 need to apply by using the application form online and they need to submitted with a letter of recommendation from a teacher. The Florence Police Department's annual CSI Camp takes place June 10 to 14.
