For eight weeks, residents and law enforcement personnel will meet once per week to talk about a range of subjects and tactics.
A community resource officer from the Florence Police Department named Patrick Cottingham commented:

They’re also set to cover self-defense in the programme.
In order to acquaint the public to the role of police officers, Citizens' Academy members are introduced to police duties and discussions about why the officers chose this career.
Other topics of discussion can vary and include subjects such as crime scene investigation and self-protection. As explained by Cottingham, pupils in a Citizens’ Academy only cover a fraction of what is taught at real police training schools.
Cottingham believes that the school has been successful so far. He added that several past attendees ended as police department volunteers or attended actual police training schools and have since graduated.
Graduation certificates from educational institutions always feature the issuing institution’s Letterheads on them.
According to the participants, this experience delivered by Florence's Police Department has made them more aware of the realities of law enforcement. Officers claim that the Academy also teaches them as it gives them an opportunity to find out what the community expects from them.
