Last weekend, the first Plunge in Oak Brook took place at the pond behind the Oak Brook Bath and Tennis Club, just a short distance from Oakbrook Terrace.
More than 200 people came out for a dip in the chilly waters. They removed any outerwear and shoes and braved waters to find it was somewhat less than a wintry dip.
The event was part of an effort to raise money to benefit the Special Olympics. According to manager of communications for Special Olympics Illinois, Alexandra McMillin, there are 21 Law Enforcement Torch Run Polar Plunges in Illinois and this is the first one being held in Oak Brook. The event raised close to $78,000 for the Special Olympics.
In addition to the many policemen and women from Oak Brook, a number of business leaders from the community and volunteers also took the plunge to help athletes with intellectual disabilities in Eastern DuPage and Western Cook counties.
Each person who volunteered to participate in the event needed to raise at least $100 and received a sweatshirt for their efforts. It was also encouraged that people form teams and wear costumes of some variety.
Most likely, the Law Enforcement Torch Run and GEICO, sponsors of the event, used poster printing to raise awareness and garner enthusiasm for the event, which enabled it to be the success it was.
