Park district gains six-figure sum for upgrades

An amount of $400,000 was recently awarded to the Oak Brook Park District, just a short distance from Oakbrook Terrace, by Governor Pat Quinn from the Open Space Land Acquisition and Development (OSLAD) grant fund.

Money for the Open Space Land Acquisition and Development grants is funded by the OSLAD program, which provides financial assistance to local government agencies for the acquisition of land for new or expanding parks. It also covers the development and renovation of such areas as picnic and playground facilities, sports courts and play fields, park roads and paths, restrooms, and outdoor nature interpretive facilities.

Overall, the program provides $24m, with another $2m from the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund program to support 75 projects in 28 counties throughout the state. Both programs fund up to half of the cost for each project.

The grant funds will be used by the Oak Brook Park District to make improvements to the athletic fields in Central Park. Two OSLAD grants received by the park district in previous years have enabled the agency to add other amenities to the park and to help finance the development and restoration of the Dorothy and Sam Dean Nature Sanctuary.

To spread the word of the improvements that will be made as a result of this grant, the Park District might want to use postcard printing to contact people throughout the area.
