Oakbrook Terrace company to develop vessel for wind industry

Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Corporation (GLDD), with headquarters in Oakbrook Terrace, will be designing and developing an inclined fallpipe vessel for installation of subsea rock.

The first vessel of its kind to be compliant with the US Jones Act, the development is essential to the advancement of the offshore wind industry and the creation of active offshore wind leases along the eastern coast of the country.

The vessel from GLDD will be built completely in the United States and owned and operated by American workers. As it will establish a rock supply chain network in the United States, it will create regional economic opportunities and job growth as quarries are built along the East Coast. There will be additional economic and job opportunities created on the Gulf Coast, many of which may require business card printing, as well as the building of the vessel taking place there. In the long term, GLDD is expecting that both the Gulf and the West Coasts will benefit from offshore wind projects.

Chief executive officer and president of GLDD, Lasse Petterson, said that the potential growth of offshore wind in the United States can become an economic stimulus for the United States. He added his belief that this is the best time for his company to use its expertise in this specialized vessel.
