A grant from a foundation in the Chicago area has enabled Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital to expand its treatment options for patients with arm and hand impairments.
The hospital has recently acquired the Armeo®Spring arm and hand rehabilitation equipment for its Oakbrook Terrace outpatient facility. This treatment is an option often chosen for patients with weakness or paralysis in the upper extremities. The hospital is now one of only four providers in the state that offer treatment with this equipment.
According to Residency Director, Dr. Noel Rao, this is an innovative treatment for patients recovering from brain injury, stroke, or other neurologic injuries. There have been limited treatment options for such patients and this equipment provides a new treatment that can facilitate recovery of movement that has been lost.
The Armeo®Spring is a robotic exoskeleton that covers the entire arm, from the hand up to the shoulder and counterbalances the weight of the patient’s arm. This way, any neuromuscular control they may still have can be enhanced to help movement in a three-dimensional environment. The therapy has patients simulating both real and game-like movements in a virtual reality environment.
Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital may be using brochure printing companies to help get more information out about this equipment, those who qualify, and how they may be able to receive treatment.
