Worlds Fair event hosted at McHenry High School
Students, parents and staff at the McHenry High School were able to experience cultures from all over the world thanks to a World's Fair event that was hosted at the school’s gymnasium.
The event was hosted by the school's senior cultural studies students. Over 50 students came together to set up booths that represented numerous countries such as Greece, Germany, Brunei, India, Madagascar, and India. A total of 27 booths were set up to demonstrate each country’s traditions, customs, and economies, with various promotional products telling the story.
The students were well-versed in all of their countries’ traditions. The World Fair is held at the end of a semester spent studying foreign countries and writing detailed research papers on which they are graded. The knowledge the students gained through the year helps them to make sure that the World Fair features authentic dances and cuisines from their respective countries.
The social science teachers ensured that stereotypes were avoided by insisting that the students use reputable sources of information. The World’s Fair event at McHenry High School is designed to recreate the World Fair events popular in the 1900s that brought together cultures from across the globe to celebrate their differences. The modern version is a chance to show how those countries are holding onto their heritage while incorporating new practices and technologies.
