River cleanup aids conservation efforts near Lyons

The Friends of the Chicago River have announced an upcoming cleanup effort near Lyons for this spring, and area residents are welcome to sign up.

The Chicago River Day 2026 is coming up this May with the goal of cleaning up the Chicago-Calumet River system, continuing the work that has led to the healthiest state the rivers have enjoyed in 150 years. Volunteers, who will be led by Site Captain Mayor Sergio Rodriguez, will focus on cleaning up litter that harms wildlife and humanity.

The cleanup efforts will feature a family-friendly environment, offering parents in the Lyons area an opportunity to make a difference while creating memories with their children. Volunteers who help in the Lyons area will be part of a larger cleanup initiative scheduled at 80 sites across the greater Chicago region. Flyer printing is a cost-effective option for community organizers who wish to raise awareness of volunteer opportunities like this.

Children aged eight and over are welcome to help but must be joined by a parent or guardian. Other cleanup efforts may involve removing invasive plants from the river’s banks. Volunteers will receive a commemorative T-shirt for their efforts.

The cleanup date is scheduled for Saturday, May 9 from 9:00 AM to noon. Volunteers will meet at 7800 Canal Bank in nearby Summit. Registration is free and open online.
