Libertyville High officially dedicates new garden

What started off as a dream for a rooftop garden has turned into an outdoor courtyard decorated with prairie plants at Libertyville High School.

Dave Lapish’s initial idea to have a rooftop garden had to be abandoned because it became expensive and impractical. However, he did not give up and decided that he could follow through with the idea at a different location. This is how the open space near the principal’s office became an outdoor classroom. The Prairie Classroom was officially dedicated this month after five years of hard work. The school tested out the space with various uses for a year before it was officially opened.

An event on Monday, September 12 was held to formally honor the work put in by hundreds of volunteers and students. With the input of school administration and students, the project got started by breaking ground in 2019.

The weedy courtyard was replaced with a garden that is home to more than 19 grasses and flowers, all of them native to the region. One of the plants in the courtyard is the rattlesnake master, a plant that got its name because pioneers mistakenly believed that it could be used to cure the bite of a rattlesnake.
