Joliet to show some love to its urban wildlife

Robins, sparrows, and pigeons are some everyday birds with fascinating qualities, and an online activity will offer a glimpse into what makes them so interesting.

Joliet residents may be surprised to learn that wildlife is all around them, whether it is spiders, chipmunks, or birds. The Forest Preserve District of Will County has created its “Underappreciated” virtual workshop series to provide an introduction to these species, and each will focus on a different group of animals. The first instalment will introduce common city and suburban birds, while the other two will discuss mammals, arachnids, and local insects.

During the “Underappreciated: City Birds” event, the attendees will learn an assortment of facts about the feathered friends that survive and thrive in urban and suburban environments. ID tips will be shared, and the hope is that the participants will have a greater appreciation of the wildlife that shares their space.

The pandemic has many companies and organizations have had to convert their in-person events to an online format. A poster printing company will have an assortment of ways to get the word out to the public about when and where they will be offered, and when in-person events can resume.

This chance to discover what allows some animals to survive and thrive in the heart of the city will take place using the Zoom platform on September 2. The registration system for the activity is open to the public now.
